orkos lair!

this is my personal website, which i mostly do to have that sweet 90s homepage nostalgia, i think. do not expect to much here.

about this site

i will try to explain why i do this. and maybe figure it out a bit myself along the way.

preface

so about a month before i started this, i joined mastodon as @orko@weirder.earth. it's great fun, but being microblogging and limited to 500 characters per post, for longer thought trains i'd either have to post long threads, or find another place to vent.

when i started to build my first personal website, the web was vastly different. it was the 90s, netscape navigator rules supreme, and mostly everyone who used the net for more than just banking had a website. english not being my mother tongue, and me being in my early teens reading documentation was not for me. i rather learned html and the likes be experimenting with it, whenever i saw something neat i'd view the pages source and redo it. so i did not really write my pages, i copy-pasted them. and tried to figure out what i was doing. obviously one tends to romanticise ones youth, but i still fondly remember tweaking the page, decorating it, and all that wild 90s web fun.

so, given the wish to have something to publish longer texts, plus my feelings for websites of yore, i registered at neocities to have both.

so is this a blog?

technically: no.
this will (probably) not offer RSS feeds. this will (probably) not have "posts". this will (probably) not be automated much.

over the years i had blogs. a lot. i installed serendipity, wordpress, used a static site generator, wrote my own static site generator, threw that away and used another, had some wordpress installations on the side, and so on. i spent time configuring the software, searched for good themes, adapted them, changed bits. but i never wrote much. so i had some really beautiful and neatly built empty huts. i don't want that here.

still, when i signed up for this webspace yesterday i kinda did the same. at first i marveled at the simplicity, the built in editor of neocities, the appeal of just having some html files around and writing in them.
then i had dinner, then i installed hugo (a static site generator) on my machine, searched for a theme, set everything up, published an empty but beautiful page. i set everything up so i had my posts in git, and it would automatically build everything and publish to the web.

my plan

then i slept on it. and today the idea to scrap all that and just write plain HTML, like i did 25 years ago, resonated in me more and more.

so i did. i will not make up some intricate structure. i will not spend hours on tooling. i want to see what content i will come up with, and go from there, see what feels right. maybe this will wither, maybe it will thrive. we'll see. or i will, as i'm not exactly sure this will be of interest for anyone but me myself. 😄

welcome to my new lair. it's meant to be cozy here.
